Luego del
anunciado retiro de Steven Soderbergh, finalmente llega su última producción.
La carrera del prometedor y joven director nacido en Atlanta comenzó
oficialmente con un video documental de la banda Yes. Poco a poco y un par de cortos de por medio, se hizo camino
hacia su primer largometraje conocido como Sexo,
mentira y video. No repercutió demasiado en taquilla ni popularmente, pero
más de uno vio en Soderbergh un potencial que hace mucho no se veía en
Hollywood. Tuvieron que pasar un buen par de films (algunos de ellos realmente
muy buenos como Un romance peligroso
y Vengar la sangre) hasta su primer
gran éxito parejo tanto en taquilla como critica: Erin Brockovich. Esta película estrenada en el año 2000 fue mucho
más que un brillante vehículo para llevar a Julia Roberts al Oscar.
Retrataba
la lucha de una mujer sola contra la impunidad de las grandes industrias. Ese
mismo año el buen Steven parecía inquieto y sobre productivo cuando al poco
tiempo estrenó quizás su obra maestra protagonizada por Benicio Del Toro y
Michael Douglas entre otros. Traffic le
significó a Soderbergh el reconocimiento unánime como el excelente director que
es. El niño prodigio de Hollywood había madurado para convertirse en un serio
realizador, y fue gracias a Traffic que obtuvo su reconocimiento como mejor
director de ese año por los Oscars de la academia.
En el medio
pasaron muchas producciones interesantes como La gran estafa, Solaris, Che
Parte I y II y unos cuantos etcéteras más. Pero hace unos pocos años atrás
Soderbergh manifestó su cansancio con la industria cinematográfica y anunció
sus últimas producciones. Para sorpresa de muchos el director empezó a
encadenar estrenos de películas completamente intrascendentes como La Traición y la casi vergonzosa Magic Mike. De esa camada de películas se desprende
Efectos Colaterales, la presuntamente última de las anunciadas. Con el
antecedente inmediato de venir de una serie de fracasos, pero a la vez
conociendo el talento que tiene el director como autor, uno podía ir a ver Efectos Colaterales esperando cualquier
cosa. Por suerte para todos su última película es un digno final a una (en
resumen) buena carrera cinematográfica.
La película está
dividida en dos partes principales. La primera mitad es práctica y
exclusivamente un drama en el cual se presenta a una protagonista uncida en una
vida de depresión y amargura. Pero a medida que avanza la historia, este drama
psiquiátrico donde se pone mucho en tela de juicio el uso de los fármacos
psicotrópicos, va mutando hacia la segunda parte de la historia que de la mano
de Catherine Zeta Jones y Jude Law se transforma en un Thriller policial
cargado de puntos de giro. Efectos colaterales es indudablemente un interesante
fin (o con un poco de suerte, un paráte) a la carrera del (ya no tan) niño
prodigio de Hollywood.
